Solana Community Lead Plans Clacton Run With On-Chain Pledge
Stephen “Cap” Newnham, head of Solana community group Superteam UK, said he will stand as an independent in Britain’s Clacton parliamentary by-election.
Newnham is seeking the seat against Reform UK leader Nigel Farage with five pledges covering local business, technology education, financial literacy, pension control and campaign donation and meeting disclosure. The vote is scheduled for August 13.
Donations and Meetings Would be Recorded On-Chain
Newnham said campaign donations and political meetings would be published in plain English and recorded on-chain. The proposal would create a public record that is harder to alter after publication.
The campaign has not specified which blockchain would hold the records, what information each entry would contain or how disclosures would be verified before publication. An on-chain record can preserve submitted data, but it cannot prove that every donation or meeting was reported.
Five Pledges Cover Business, AI and Finance Education
Newnham’s other pledges include support for Clacton entrepreneurs, digital and artificial intelligence education, and financial literacy in schools.
He announced his intention to stand on July 9, though the council’s official candidate list is not expected until the nomination process closes.
That timing means his campaign remains at the declared-intention stage until election officials confirm the final list of candidates.
Pension Pledge Avoids Crypto Product Claim
Newnham’s pension proposal argues that savers should have more control over where their retirement assets are held. He pointed to existing arrangements such as self-invested personal pensions and small self-administered schemes as models that already give some people wider investment choice.
The campaign has not proposed changes to pension law or said that retirement assets should be moved onto Solana or another blockchain. Its current pitch focuses on ownership and choice rather than a crypto pension product.
Farage Resignation Triggered August 13 Vote
Newnham leads Superteam UK, a community that supports founders, developers and other contributors working in the Solana ecosystem. He has also worked on research covering blockchain and the future of work.
The Clacton contest was triggered when Farage resigned from Parliament on July 8. UK Parliament lists the by-election for August 13, while Farage has said he will seek the seat again.
Newnham’s entry puts an explicit blockchain transparency proposal into a parliamentary race. The next formal step is publication of the confirmed candidate list after nominations close.
