Sui Upgrade Fixes Bugs Behind Three Outages

Sui Foundation said a validator upgrade has fixed the software bugs behind three mainnet outages on May 28 and May 29.

The incidents left the network halted for more than 15 hours across two days. In its incident review, the Foundation said user funds were never at risk and no committed transactions were reverted when the network resumed.

May 28 Gas Bug Caused 6.5-Hour First Halt

The first outage was tied to a crash bug in gas-charging logic introduced in Sui version 1.72. The same release also added the new address balances feature.

Sui said the first halt began around 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time on May 28 and ended around 1:30 p.m. Validators adopted an interim fix to bring the network back online.

May 29 Gas Bug Caused 3.5-Hour Second Outage

The interim fix carried what Sui described as a known low-probability halt risk. That risk materialized on May 29 when the network hit a variant of the same gas-charging issue.

The second outage began around 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time and ended around 8:30 a.m. Validators then moved toward a more durable fix for the gas-charging failure path.

Epoch-Change Bug Triggered 5.8-Hour Third Halt

The third outage came later on May 29 during a scheduled epoch change. Sui said a separate latent bug affected how validators preserved randomness state across restarts.

That issue left the network unable to close the epoch normally. The halt began around 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time and ended around 7:20 p.m. after validators adopted another coordinated fix.

Upgrade Fixes Gas-Charging and Randomness Bugs

Sui Foundation said the latest validator upgrade addresses both the original gas-charging failures and the randomness-state issue.

The Foundation also said more work remains on gas charging, end-of-epoch resilience and failure containment. The review follows a separate roughly six-hour Sui disruption in January 2026, which was tied to a consensus issue.
