Coinbase Lets AI Agents Trade and Pay

Coinbase has launched Coinbase for Agents, a product that lets AI agents connect directly to user accounts to trade, make payments and carry out approved financial tasks. The tool is available through Model Context Protocol and a command-line interface.

The launch pushes Coinbase further into agent-driven finance, where AI systems can act on user instructions instead of only answering questions. The company said users can connect agents such as ChatGPT or Claude to Coinbase accounts while keeping activity inside limits they control.

Spot and Derivatives Trading Are Live

Coinbase said crypto spot and derivatives trading are enabled at launch. Users can ask an agent to rebalance a portfolio, place orders under a defined strategy or monitor holdings around the clock.

The company said it plans to expand the feature to stocks, index funds, prediction markets and commodities. That would expand the product beyond crypto trading if those markets become available through the same account system.

Users Can Limit Agent Account Access

The product gives users a choice between granting access to a main Coinbase account or setting up an isolated portfolio. Coinbase said an agent only gets access to the activity the user has approved.

More detailed controls are planned, including maximum trade size, spending caps and limits on which services an agent can use. Coinbase said payments through the product are subject to its transaction monitoring and know-your-transaction checks.

x402 Will Support Machine Payments

Coinbase for Agents also connects to the company’s wider agent payment work. Coinbase said x402 support is coming soon, letting agents pay for services such as premium data, compute, statistics and other online tools.

The x402 protocol was developed to let software make machine-to-machine payments without subscriptions or manual checkout flows. For trading agents, paid data feeds, analytics tools and compute services could become part of the same automated workflow.

AgentKit Follow-Up Brings Live Account Access

The launch follows Coinbase’s earlier AgentKit developer tools and its work on agent wallets. The company said Coinbase for Agents brings account access into AI tools users already use, rather than requiring a separate trading interface.

The launch puts user-controlled limits, monitoring and error controls at the centre of Coinbase’s agent-access model. Coinbase is giving agents real account access, not just research functions, making permissions central to how users allow AI systems to move money and trade crypto on their behalf.
