TON Rises 15% as Gram Rebrand Returns

Toncoin rallied after Telegram founder Pavel Durov said The Open Network’s native currency will be renamed from Toncoin to Gram over the next three weeks.

Durov said TON will remain the name of the blockchain, while the token will return to the Gram name used in the network’s first white paper.

TON Moves From $1.95 to Above $2.25

The market reacted quickly after Durov’s post. TON climbed more than 15% from around $1.95 to above $2.25 late Monday before cooling to roughly $2.07 by Tuesday morning, according to price summaries.

The Defiant separately reported that the token reached $2.21 after trading near $1.83 before the rebrand announcement.

2020 SEC Case Ended Original Gram Sale

The rebrand brings back the token name Telegram originally planned to use before U.S. regulators intervened. In 2020, the SEC said Telegram agreed to return more than $1.2 billion to investors and pay an $18.5 million civil penalty.

The settlement resolved charges tied to Telegram’s unregistered Gram token offering. The new plan revives the Gram name without relaunching the original token sale.

Telegram’s Role in TON Grew in May

The rebrand also comes as Telegram’s relationship with TON becomes closer. Reports said Telegram moved in May to take a larger role in TON’s direction and validator structure.

That has tightened the link between the blockchain and Telegram’s consumer ecosystem. The rename now gives the token a brand closer to Telegram’s original blockchain plan, while keeping TON as the network name.

No Token Swap Needed During Three-Week Rebrand

Durov said holders, validators, wallets and DeFi integrations do not need to take action during the change. The rename is a rebrand rather than a token swap. That lowers technical friction for users and applications already connected to Toncoin.

The next step is the three-week transition from Toncoin to Gram. Traders will be watching whether the rebrand supports activity across Telegram-linked payments, mini apps and DeFi integrations.
