MoonPay PayBox Enables AI Payment Approvals

MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that connects with ChatGPT and Claude and lets users prepare crypto trades, transfers and online payments through natural-language prompts.

The service went live on July 29. Users can keep control of their funds, approve individual transactions with a passkey or give an AI agent limited authority to act within predefined spending and transaction rules.

Users Can Swap, Bridge and Access DeFi Through AI Prompts 

PayBox connects to ChatGPT and Claude through a custom connector. A user can ask the assistant to buy a stablecoin, swap tokens, bridge assets between supported networks or interact with decentralized finance protocols.

The AI prepares the transaction rather than signing it independently. Under PayBox’s default approval model, the user reviews the action and confirms it with a passkey before funds move.

PayBox Supports Solana and Seven EVM Networks at Launch 

PayBox supports Solana and several EVM-compatible networks at launch. Supported networks include Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo and Robinhood Chain.

MoonPay plans to add more networks after launch. The initial chain list gives users access to swaps, bridging and DeFi activity across major retail and institutional crypto ecosystems.

“Always Ask” Requires Passkey Approval for Every Transaction

Users can choose between two authorization models. “Always Ask” requires a fresh passkey approval for every transaction. “Autonomous” allows the connected AI agent to transact within limits set by the user.

Permission changes still require human authorization. Each approval is tied to a specific action and cannot be reused for another transaction.

MPC and TEEs Keep Private Keys From AI Agents 

Wallet keys are protected using multi-party computation and trusted execution environments. MoonPay said neither the AI assistant nor MoonPay itself can obtain the complete private key or independently sign transactions.

The infrastructure uses technology from Sodot, the wallet security company MoonPay acquired earlier this year. That setup keeps the AI agent in the transaction-preparation role rather than giving it direct control over user funds.

Visa and x402 Extend PayBox Beyond Crypto Payments 

PayBox is not limited to on-chain trading. Users can add payment cards and instruct an AI assistant to complete supported purchases, including travel bookings, restaurant reservations and online shopping.

Card details are kept from the AI agent, while payments can use Visa’s agentic commerce infrastructure. PayBox also supports x402, an open payment standard that allows software agents to pay compatible online services.

MoonPay describes PayBox as noncustodial, with funds moving directly between the user’s funding source and the receiving wallet, protocol, or merchant. The next test will be how users balance autonomous spending permissions with the security controls needed when AI agents can directly interact with crypto and payment rails.
