Coinbase Ventures was the crypto industry’s most active investor by deal count in the first half of 2026, joining 30 funding rounds.

The exchange’s venture arm finished 11 deals ahead of Animoca Brands as CryptoRank data showed fewer active investors across the sector.

Coinbase Led Animoca by 11 H1 Deals

CryptoRank data placed Animoca Brands second with 19 investments, followed by a16z Crypto with 18 and stablecoin issuer Tether with 15. The ranking measures deal participation, not the total capital each firm committed.

Coinbase Ventures also led over the 12 months through June with 75 deals. Animoca completed 40, YZi Labs recorded 39, market maker GSR joined 31 and a16z completed 30 during the same period.

Coinbase says its venture unit usually works with early-stage companies and invests across the crypto economy. Its portfolio includes blockchain infrastructure, developer tools, exchanges, DeFi protocols and consumer applications.

Payments Accounted for 7 H1 Investments

Payment protocols accounted for seven of Coinbase Ventures’ investments during the first six months of the year. The firm also joined four DeFi rounds and three deals each involving infrastructure and real-world asset tokenization.

Those areas match themes Coinbase Ventures identified for 2026, including asset tokenization, specialized exchanges, new DeFi products and applications combining blockchain systems with artificial intelligence.

DeFi Led market Fundraising With 216 Rounds

Across the crypto market, DeFi attracted 216 fundraising rounds during the past year. Payments followed with 131 rounds, while crypto and AI projects completed 128. Infrastructure companies recorded 110 rounds.

The category data shows Coinbase Ventures remained active in areas that continued drawing funding even as overall investor participation narrowed.

June Crypto Funding Fell to $1.4B

Crypto companies raised about $1.4 billion across 61 rounds in June, down from $3.8 billion in April. The number of rounds also fell from 89 in May. Active investor participation dropped to 242 firms from 452 in October 2025.

Coinbase Ventures’ lead came from keeping a high investment pace during a slower fundraising period. The firm ended the first half of 2026 at the top of CryptoRank’s deal-count table with 30 investments.
